Raleigh is conveniently located on I-40 in eastern North Carolina,
with easy access from I-85 and US-64. If you choose to travel by
car, Raleigh is just four-and-a-half hours from Charleston, three hours
from Richmond, and six-and-a-half hours from Atlanta.
PARKING
All three main conference hotels--the Raleigh Marriott, the Sheraton,
and the New Clarion hotel offer free parking with a sleeping room reservation. There is a 900-space parking garage attached to the Raleigh Convention
Center and more than 4,000 parking spaces within a 2-block radius of the
center.
GETTING THERE—BY AIR
Raleigh-Durham International Airport (www.rdu.com) is just 20 minutes away from
downtown Raleigh. Raleigh-Durham International Airport offers arrivals and
departures on nine major airlines (AirTran, American, Continental, Delta, Jet Blue,
Northwest, Southwest, United, USAir), and 16 regional carriers. Direct international
flights are available from London and Toronto.
BY CAR
I-95 North
Keep right at Exit 81 onto I-W40 West (AKA I-440, Thomas Bradshaw Freeway).
Keep right at Exit 298-B; then turn right onto US 70 North (AKA US 401, SR
50, and South Saunders Street).
I-95 South
Keep right at Exit 138 onto US 64 West (AKA SR 264). Keep left onto I-440
(AKA US 64). Keep left at Exit 16 and merge with I-40 West (AKA I-440, Thomas
Bradshaw Freeway). Keep right at Exit 298-B; then turn right onto US 70
North (AKA US 401, SR 50, and South Saunders Street).
I-40 East or RDU Airport Keep left and stay on I-40 East (AKA I-440, Thomas
Bradshaw Freeway) at Exit 289. Keep right at Exit 298-A, then turn left onto
US 70 North (AKA US 401, SR 50, and South Saunders Street).
Once on US 70 North
After six blocks, US 70/South Saunders Street splits and the right lanes
become McDowell Street. Continue past Western Boulevard junction three blocks.
Turn right onto West Cabarrus Street. Turn right onto South Salisbury Street
and then another right onto East Lenoir Street. The convention center will
be on the right and parking will be on the left.
BY TRAIN
Amtrak offers service to Raleigh from Richmond, Washington, D. C., Baltimore,
Philadelphia, Miami, Tampa, Savannah, and Charleston. The Raleigh Station,
located at 320 West Cabarrus Street, is two blocks from the convention center.
GETTING AROUND RALEIGH
Raleigh is due to launch a FREE Downtown Circulator bus route starting
in February 2009. This Circulator will be in operation during the hours
of 7:00am
- 11:00pm Monday to Wednesday, and 7:00am to 2:15am Thursday-Saturday.
On Sunday the hours will be 1:00pm to 8:00pm.
There will be a Circulator bus stop right in front of the Raleigh Convention
Center at 500 Salisbury Street - directly behind the Marriott and adjacent
to the Sheraton hotels. The Circulator will run to the State Library
and Archives (closest stop is the corner of Wilmington and Edenton Streets
- 1 block to 109 Jones Street where the Archives is located). The Circulator
takes 20 minutees to complete the entire downtown route - and two Circulators
will be in transit at all porposed times. Route maps will be available
shortly.
Public transportation in and around Raleigh is provided by the CAT (Capital
Area Transit), which operates 37 bus routes and an historic trolley line
within the city.
Taxis are available throughout the city.
Transportation from RDU Airport to Conference Hotels
The Raleigh Marriott, Sheraton, and New Clarion hotels do not provide
shuttle service.
Airport taxi service is currently (December 2008) being quoted at $38.00
to $44.00.
White Horse Transportation, Inc. offers a shuttle service from the Raleigh-Durham
Airport to downtown hotels. The base charge is $45.00 one way for the first
person; additional individuals are $5.00 each. They will work to put people
together on the same trip (if 4 people reserve for the same time, the prorated
charge would be $15.00 each; for 6 people the charge would be $11.80 each).
