- Award for Excellence: Genealogy and Family History 2005
This year's award goes to Phillip G. Goff and Roy L. Lockhart, the two authors
of The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia. The example set by this
book is what family historians should strive for when publishing their research
results. This was a team effort with Mr. Lockhart doing much of the extensive
research, photograph and Mr. Goff compiling that research and his own research
into an award-winning book. There were many others who contributed to this
work and are acknowledged in the Preface. It is evident from the extensive
citations, that the researchers were very diligent and that the research spanned
many years. Even though this book covers only the first four generations,
it includes all know descendants. To enhance the book, original drawings were
done buy Susana Weber, a descendant of James Goff. Phillip Goff credits the
use of Patricia Law Hatcher's, Producing a Quality Family History and Elizabeth
Shown Mills', Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian as his
guides to producing the book. Copies of the book will be placed in the NGS
Collection in St. Louis County Public Library, St. Louis, Missouri; Dallas
Public Library, Dallas, Texas; Denver Public Library, Central Branch, Denver,
Colorado; and Library of Michigan, Lansing, Michigan.
- The 2005 Filby Award (The Filby Prize for Genealogical Librarianship) was
awarded to Ron D. Bryant of Kentucky. He received this award for his more
than 20 years of service as the Kentucky History & Genealogy Specialist at
the Kentucky Historical Society and at the Kentucky State Parks Department.
