    Introduction to Genealogy is an online course for those who have done little, if any, research on their families. It is open to anyone who wishes to enroll. Members of the National Genealogical Society (NGS) receive a tuition discount.

    Special Federal Census Schedules is an online course designed for genealogists who want to learn more about the information that can be found in census records, and how that information can be used in their genealogical research. It is the second of two separate courses. Using Census Records in Genealogical Research covers the federal population census schedules, and Special Federal Census Schedules covers other federal census schedules. The course is open to anyone who wishes to enroll. Members of the National Genealogical Society (NGS) receive a tuition discount.

Transcribing, Extracting, And Abstracting Genealogical Records

    Transcribing, Extracting, And Abstracting Genealogical Records - This course provides instruction in transcribing, extracting, and abstracting genealogical documents.
    The course is a manual that you can use over and over again as you develop skill in transcribing, extracting, and abstracting documents. Each lesson contains practice lessons where you apply what you learn. The practice exercises take the place of tests or quizzes that test how well you can search out the "right" answer.

    How do you know if you are ready to take this course?

    • You want to learn how to transcribe, extract, and abstract documents.
    • You have collected information from a wide variety of records and want to know how to reduce the pile of papers by abstracting the documents.
    • You want to learn how to take quick and effective notes when you are in a repository.

American Genealogy Special Topics Series: Working With Deeds

    Working with Deeds is a self-paced course designed for genealogists who want to learn about various types of deeds and how information contained in them can help solve research problems. The course consists of a downloadable PDF file that can be printed or read on a computer using the free Adobe Reader program. After you register and pay for the course, you’ll be able to log in and download the file. Because it is self-graded, no certificate of completion will be issued for the Working with Deeds course.
    The course consists of the following lessons:

    • Lesson One: What is a deed?
    • Lesson Two: What information will you find in deeds?
    • Lesson Three: How do you locate deeds and other local land records?
    • Lesson Four: How do you transcribe and abstract a deed?
    • Lesson Five: How do you evaluate the evidence in land records?
    • Lesson Six: Citing Deeds.
    • A Glossary
    • A Reading and Reference List

    Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

    • Locate a deed.
    • Explain what can be found in deeds.
    • Transcribe a deed.
    • Abstract a deed.
    • Evaluate the evidence in a deed.
    • Write a citation for a deed.

    Here is the course process:

    • Study a content section.
    • Take a short self-test.
    • Check the answers to confirm your understanding of the content.
    • Review content as needed.
    • Proceed to the next section and repeat the above steps.
    • Complete the test at the conclusion of each section.
