NGS GENTECH . . . bridging genealogy and technology

Who We Are

GENTECH, a division of the National Genealogical Society, facilitates communication among persons interested in genealogy and technology. Through presenting national conferences, sponsoring programs with other societies, and publishing white papers based on analyses of problems of common interest to genealogists and technologists, we seek to maximize the movement of knowledge among the members of our constituencies.

Conferences

The 2010 NGS Family History Conference will feature the GENTECH luncheon. This year’s speaker is David E. Rencher, AG, CG, FUGA, FIGRS on the topic: The Top 10 Areas Where Technology can still make a REAL Difference in Genealogy – Could You Please Hurry? An amusing, but candid look at areas where technology could make a significant difference if the right minds and resources were applied to some of genealogy’s toughest problems.

There will be a GENTECH lecture track throughout the conference covering a variety of topics including: Cloud computing, Digital technology, blogging, data preservation and backup, social networking, photo editing, Web 2.0, using Ancestry.com, doing research in real time, using The Master Genealogist software, FamilySearch tools and software, DNA, using laptops for field research, using footnote.com, and voice recognition software.

An added feature at this year’s conference is the GENTECH Hall sponsored by FamilySearch. This is an addition of nearly 100 exhibit booths to the regular NGS conference hall that will focus solely on technology and genealogy. The technologies will cover the spectrum of current technologies that can assist genealogists including tools and services, mobile devices, ebooks, web applications, desktop applications, social networking/collaboration, GPS and Geo mapping, media capture and conversion (i.e. microfilm etc.), and expert technical help.

There will also be a technology demonstration area in the exhibit hall with theater seating for 150 people as well as 60 computer terminals for you to immediately access and try some of the products and services you have just viewed.
