Frequently Asked Questions Home Study Course
Why should I choose this course?
We believe our home study course teaches the basics of genealogical research
in a more comprehensive, systematic, and "hands-on" manner than you can find
elsewhere.
Can I enroll in the course regardless of my previous
education level?
Yes, the course is open to everyone. Those who have taken some college-level
classes and who have good basic writing skills will find the course easier.
I have been researching my ancestors for several years.
What benefit could I obtain from this course?
The course is designed to broaden your knowledge of sources, finding aids, research
techniques, record keeping, and evidence analysis.
How long will it take to complete the course?
Your original enrollment period for each CD is one year. If you are unable to
complete the course during that time, you may request an extension of your enrollment
by 6 months.
I have physical disabilities that will make it difficult
or impossible to work outside my home. Can I still take the course?
This is a "hands-on" course with self-guided field trips. It is designed for
those who can make visits to local repositories like libraries, courthouses,
churches, archives, and cemeteries to complete assignments.
Can I enroll in the course if I live outside the United
States?
We accept enrollments from residents of other countries. There may be additional
postage costs. Students should understand that only U.S. records are covered
in the course. It may be difficult to arrange the self-guided field trips. In
that case, students may opt to take the non-graded choice.
If I am unable to complete the course, can I receive
a tuition refund?
Within thirty (30) calendar days after we process your enrollment application,
you may request cancellation and receive tuition
refund minus postage costs. This is subject to your return of all course materials
to NGS.
If I misplace the CD's can I get a replacement set?
Please store your CD's in a safe place. We cannot replace the CD's at no
cost. There will be a fee associated with it.
Will I receive
a certificate of completion once I have successfully completed the course?
Once a student has successfully completed
all sixteen lessons of the course in the graded version, a certificate of completion
is awarded.
After taking this course, can I be certified by the
Board for Certificate of Genealogists?
The Board for Certification of Genealogists is an independent organization.
Applicants must meet its certification standards. Our home
study course teaches the basic knowledge and skills that a person seeking
certification should have. It is among the educational opportunities listed
in the BCG brochure "Educational Preparation for Certification." For further
information on certification, visit the BCG web site at http://www.bcgcertification.org.
I am not a member of the National Genealogical Society.
What are the benefits of membership?
How do I enroll in the course?
Send the application to us with your tuition payment. You may enroll
online, or print out the enrollment application and send it to us by mail
or fax. All enrollments are processed promptly, and the CD will be shipped to
you.
