Genetic Genealogy, Autosomal DNA is an intermediate course that focuses primarily on concepts and techniques for genetic genealogy. The concepts taught in this course cover how to analyze data to identify genetic cousins and find unknown ancestors. It addresses population databases and admixture percentages as well as how well–researched family trees relate to DNA analysis.

Course Description

The Genetic Genealogy, Autosomal DNA course will show you how autosomal DNA (atDNA) and X-DNA are inherited and how DNA recombines. atDNA test results, matching DNA, and how to contact genetic cousins is covered. You will learn the tools most commonly provided by the DNA testing companies, how admixture predictions are created from atDNA test results, and why the predictions vary from company to company. You will begin using third-party tools such as GEDmatch for analysis of atDNA. The course provides instruction on using both the common and more advanced tools for analysis of atDNA using spreadsheets for GEDmatch and DNAgedcom featured tools.

The course is divided into seven modules with multiple sections, which include readings, web links, and self-correcting quizzes as well as a reading and reference list. A full syllabus is provided to course registrants. The course modules are as follows.

How Long Does It Take to Complete an Online Course?

The Continuing Genealogical Studies series courses have no set time or date for attendance. These online courses are geared toward individuals who have schedules that are varied and may include work, volunteer, and personal demands. You prioritize your time management and your learning, so your course work can be scheduled at your own pace.

Upon registration, you have access to the course for six months from the date of registration. If you need extra time, a one-time extension of three months is granted by contacting the NGS Course Administrator.
