Level Two: Prompt Engineering and Specialized Tools

Prompt Engineering and Specialized AI Tools for Genealogists is an innovative four-week course designed to teach genealogists how to effectively utilize advanced AI tools in their research. Designed by Steve Little, the AI Program Director for NGS, the course will dive into the world of prompt engineering and custom GPTs (also called ‘bots’ or ‘assistants’), exploring how these structured prompts can direct AI to perform specific genealogical tasks with precision.

Participants will learn to build and share their own GPTs using intuitive tools like GPT Builder and develop a practical understanding of how AI can enhance their genealogical work.  The course will guide students in how to use AI to analyze and interpret historical documents and highlight the need for a keen understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations in this process.

The course will also highlight the customization possibilities that GPTs offer, allowing genealogists to tailor AI tools to their unique research requirements. This includes leveraging advanced features such as Code Interpreter and Actions, which can significantly aid in complex data analysis tasks. The final week of the course addresses ethical dimensions, including best practices in the use of GPTs. This course is not only about mastering the technical aspects of AI in genealogy but also about embracing a responsible and informed approach to integrating these powerful tools into genealogical research.

Week One: Introduction to GPTs and their capabilities, focusing on how they can be structured and customized for genealogical research.

Week Two: Hands-on exercises in building GPTs using tools like GPT Builder, with emphasis on tailoring these tools to genealogical data and documents.

Week Three: Explore advanced features like Code Interpreter and Actions and learn how these can be integrated into genealogical research.
