Transcribing, Extracting, and Abstracting Genealogical Records
Many official documents or one-of-a-kind papers cannot be collected or photocopied. Family history researchers must know how to understand and accurately record what they find in these records. This course teaches the skills to do just that.
NGS offers American Genealogy: Home Study Course, a sixteen-lesson course on three CDs, for the more experienced genealogist who wants an in-depth independent study course. Students who have completed an NGS online course receive a discount on American Genealogy: Home Study Course..
What Will I Learn?
In this eight-lesson online course, students will learn about these note-taking techniques:
- Transcriptions—handwritten or typed exact copies
- Extracts—handwritten or typed partial copies
- Abstracts—summaries or paraphrases
- Nutshell summaries—brief notations of the general contents of a record
